Frank Stella – but I use Commercial oil based paints mixed with animal fat

This painting was painted around 2002 / 03 by Peter Bright (aka This Window)

I hadn’t seen this painting for nearly 10 years – until yesterday

Materials

Organic: Commercial oil based paints mixed with animal fat and traditional oil paints. Emulsion paints mixed with traditional acrylic/watercolour/gouache paints

Synthetic: Commercial and domestic self-adhesive vinyl tape, cut with a commercial computer based design/cutting program, using  Signlab v.4.95 software package.

Prediction = the aesthetics of the system + the aesthetics of failure = Prediction

Background:

Upon moving to New York City, Frank Stella reacted against the expressive use of paint by most painters of the abstract expressionist movement, instead finding himself drawn towards the “flatter” surfaces of Barnett Newman‘s work and the “target” paintings of Jasper Johns. He began to produce works which emphasized the picture-as-object, rather than the picture as a representation of something, be it something in the physical world, or something in the artist’s emotional world.

Many of his works were created by simply using the path of the brush stroke, very often using common house paint.

I was using vinyl, a material I have used commercially, as my preferred medium. The “plasticness” of commercial vinyl tapes, their tactile and glossy qualities make them vibrant and alive; when juxtaposed against natural materials or organic shapes and colors they become a contradiction, a complement, more intense and more synthetic……which is similar to Frank Stella’s work during the 1980’s 4 . I carried out experiments with this vinyl material; I have cut and slashed it to destruction, to gain a better understanding of the inherent stability of this medium. I have rejected the possibilities of cutting out images and shapes by hand…..the aesthetics of the system was more important.

Notes on Painting:
    • The act of being creative is a love hate thing – The Beauty and The Beast someone fetch a priest(ref. David Bowie)Beauty and the Beast (French: La Belle et la Bête) is a traditional fairy tale. The first published version of the fairy tale was a rendition by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve, published in La jeune américaine, et les contes marins in 1740. The best-known written version was an abridgement of her work published in 1756 by Jeanne-Marie Le Prince de Beaumont, in Magasin des enfants, ou dialogues entre une sage gouvernante et plusieurs de ses élèves; an English translation appeared in 1757. The tale has perhaps been made most recently famous by the retelling in the 1991 Disney film.In Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia. liberated 12:47, April 7, 2011, from: http://en.wikipedia.org
    • Action Painting – Pollock. Print dribbled paint.
    • Soft pink landscapes (1980) Richard Hamilton A landscape of soft focus and toilet paper – a turgid landscape. Collotype and Screenprint – text and image. A  remembered exhibition.
    • Rediscovering the printing process after nearly 40 years has been an interesting process – disappointingly modern inks are not as rich in colour (earthy colours are very plastic like) and modern water based inks don’t become part of the surface, they sit on it, which is incredibly frustrating – the reason I took up printing in the first place was because of the absorbed flatness of the pigments.
    • ‘Stoned Moon Series’ was Rauschenberg’s ambitious response to the American space program and the landmark Apollo 11 mission that put Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the lunar surface in July 1969. At the invitation of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Rauschenberg witnessed the momentous launch of Apollo 11 at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.’

Allergy #11

Original painting by Peter Bright . Media: Painting and Screen Print on canvas, signed and dated. Price includes frame. Size: 403mm x 503mm

“Allergy #11″ was started in November 2003 and completed in April 2011. This painting was originally created for a solo exhibition in The Queen’s Theatre during 2003 but was not exhibited due to lack of wall space.

1978: I once had a girlfriend called Anne who wore ‘Charlie’ perfume. Every time we came close I sneezed. This was not conducive to a passionate affair. Her ‘big’ permed hair and ‘page three’ figure was always out of reach, until we discovered I was allergic to her bottled smell….later we discovered I was allergic to latex.

Times are really tough and I am quickly slipping into oblivion.

solo exhibition is an exhibition of the work by only one artist. Having solo shows of one’s artwork marks the achievement of success.  My shows are usually of my current work or pieces from a single time period, or representative work from different periods in my development. This  illusion of success doesn’t mean I am successful – I am actually sinking deeper and deeper into poverty so if you can help me keep a roof over my head please make an offer for this painting here .
